A good cyberpunk sweater is a dark crewneck sweatshirt with one strong graphic, heavy enough to hold its shape and fitted enough to layer under a jacket. It is the quieter cousin of the hoodie: same attitude, no hood getting in the way of a collar or a bomber. If you are choosing one, look at the fit, the fabric weight and whether you will still like the design in a year. This guide covers all three, then shows you six ways to wear it.
Sweater, sweatshirt or pullover?
People search for all three and usually mean the same thing. In streetwear, a sweater is normally a crewneck sweatshirt: cotton-rich jersey outside, soft brushed fleece inside, no hood and no zip. A pullover can also mean a pullover hoodie, and in British English a sweater can mean something knitted. Ours are all printed sweatshirts, not knitwear, so the graphic stays sharp in a way a knit never could.
Sweater vs hoodie: which should you get?
| Sweater | Hoodie | |
|---|---|---|
| Layering under a jacket | Cleaner, nothing bunches at the neck | Bulkier, but the hood looks good over a collar |
| Under a blazer or at work | Works | Harder to pull off |
| Cold and wet days | Needs an outer layer | The hood helps |
| Silhouette | Close and neat | More volume on top |
If you already own a few cyberpunk hoodies, a sweater is the piece that fills the gap. If you are still deciding on a hoodie, read how to choose a cyberpunk hoodie, and for the zip question see zip hoodie vs pullover.
How to choose a cyberpunk sweater
- Fabric weight. Around 280 GSM gives a sweatshirt enough structure to keep its shape through a winter of washing. Ours are Stanley/Stella Roller: 280 GSM, 85% organic ring-spun combed cotton with a 15% recycled polyester fleece lining.
- Fit. Our sweaters are true to size but fitted. Go a size up if you want it relaxed or want to fit a tee underneath. The sweater size guide lists every measurement, and fabric details are on the garment info page.
- One idea, drawn properly. A single strong graphic ages better than a pile of references. Look for original artwork rather than stock or screenshot prints.
- Colour. A black base goes with everything you already own and suits the cyberpunk colour palette.
- Meaning. If it has kanji or a Japanese motif on it, find out what it means before someone asks you. Our guide to Japanese symbols and meanings helps.
Six cyberpunk sweater outfits
1. Kaiju on a Tuesday
The GOJIRA sweater, black straight-leg jeans and chunky trainers. A giant monster on your chest does all the work, so you do not need anything else. It is the easiest of the six.
2. The pilot
The MECHA sweater channels the giant-robot tradition of Gundam with lightning as punctuation. Wear it under an open bomber from our cyberpunk bombers with tapered joggers, and the jacket frames the print like a cockpit.
3. The office netrunner
Yes, you can wear a graphic sweater to work, if the graphic behaves. Layer a white collar or plain tee underneath, add dark chinos and clean shoes, and pick a calmer design like the TSUKUYOMI sweater, built on the Japanese moon god. It reads as a nice sweatshirt to most people and as a statement to the ones who know.
4. Winter layers
Sweater, then a warm outer layer such as the NM sherpa jacket or a parka, then a beanie and boots. A crewneck is flatter than a hoodie under a heavy coat, so you keep your outline. Our guide to layering cyberpunk for winter has the details.
5. The folklore fit
The FUJIN sweater draws on the Japanese god of wind, one of the oldest figures in the country's mythology. Pair it with loose dark trousers and a crossbody bag. If samurai is more your thing, the SAMURAISHA sweater does the same job with a mask, crossed swords and a torii gate.
6. The matching set
Sweater and matching joggers in black read as a tracksuit from a slightly different future. Keep to one graphic, on the sweater or the joggers, so they do not compete. Browse cyberpunk joggers for options, and see our cyberpunk outfit ideas for more.
How to look after a printed sweater
Turn it inside out before washing, keep the temperature low, and skip the tumble dryer if you can. Heat is what shortens the life of any print and any fleece. Dry it flat or on a hanger and it will hold its shape for years. Check the care label on your garment for the exact instructions.
Frequently asked questions
What is a cyberpunk sweater?
A crewneck sweatshirt with a cyberpunk or Japanese-inspired graphic, usually on a black or dark base. It is worn the same way as a graphic hoodie, without the hood.
Are NEOMACHI sweaters knitted?
No. They are 280 GSM printed sweatshirts in organic cotton with a recycled polyester fleece lining.
Should I size up in a cyberpunk sweater?
For ours, yes, if you want a relaxed fit or plan to layer. They are true to size but fitted.
Is a sweater or a hoodie better for layering?
A sweater is cleaner under jackets and blazers because nothing bunches at the neck. A hoodie gives more warmth and a stronger silhouette.
