Techwear Pants and Joggers: How to Choose

Bottoms are the half of a cyberpunk outfit nobody photographs and everybody gets wrong. The graphic hoodie gets the attention, but the trousers decide whether the outfit reads as designed or as someone who put a cool top on top of whatever was clean.

There is really only one rule, and then a set of choices underneath it. Or go straight to pants and joggers.

The rule: taper, always

The defining cyberpunk proportion is volume on top and narrow at the ankle. A hood or jacket with presence, a tapered leg. That single relationship does more to make an outfit look technical and intentional than any amount of hardware, webbing or reflective detail.

Get it wrong and everything above it stops working. A great hoodie over straight-leg or baggy bottoms reads as pyjamas, because there is no contrast, just volume all the way down.

Every recommendation below is a variation on how to achieve that taper.

Joggers: the default

A jogger is defined by its elastic cuff. That cuff is the taper. It does the proportion work automatically, which is why joggers are the most common bottom in this style and the easiest to get right.

What to look for: a cuff with enough elastane to actually hold, not stretched-out cotton ribbing that pools at the ankle after three washes. A drawcord at the waist that is flat rather than round, so it does not disappear into the channel. Pockets deep enough for a phone.

The trade-off: joggers read casual. In a jogger-and-hoodie outfit you are one step from loungewear, and the thing that saves it is fabric weight. A substantial jogger looks like clothing; a thin one looks like you are about to go back to bed.

See cyberpunk joggers, and check the flat measurements in the jogger size guide before ordering.

Cargo pants: the utilitarian option

Cargos bring pocket detail, heavier fabric and a more structured leg. They are the closest thing in the category to actual street-level utility, and the visible pockets add the technical texture that plain joggers lack.

What to look for: pockets that close, because open cargo pockets are decorative and mildly annoying. A leg that tapers or has an ankle cinch; a straight-cut cargo undoes the whole proportion rule. Fabric with some structure, because soft cargos collapse and look shapeless.

The trade-off: cargos are the fastest route to costume. Pockets plus straps plus reflective panels plus a graphic hoodie is too many ideas at once. If you wear cargos, let them be the only technical element in the outfit.

See cargo pants and trousers.

Plain tapered trousers: the grown-up version

The option most people skip and then wish they had. A plain dark trouser with a tapered leg gives you the correct silhouette with none of the casual signalling of a jogger and none of the costume risk of a cargo.

This is what makes cyberpunk style wearable in an office, at a dinner, or anywhere a drawcord waistband would look wrong. Pair with a graphic tee and an open zip hoodie and the outfit works in almost any room.

Shorts: summer without abandoning the aesthetic

Summer cyberpunk is real and it is mostly handled above the waist: the graphic moves to a tee, the outer layer becomes a packable windbreaker, and the bottoms get out of the way.

Which means: keep shorts plain and dark. A graphic on the shorts and a graphic on the tee is two hero pieces, and two hero pieces is none. Length should sit at or just above the knee; anything much shorter fights the technical silhouette.

See cyberpunk shorts, with sizing in the shorts size guide.

Why bottoms should almost never carry the graphic

This is the most useful thing on this page.

Cyberpunk works on contrast: a dark field with one bright interruption. Your eye needs somewhere to land, and it should land near your face, where people are already looking. Artwork below the waist competes with the piece above it and drags attention down and away.

There are exceptions. A single small side-seam detail or an ankle print is fine because it is an accent, not a statement. A full graphic down the leg while you are also wearing a print hoodie is not. The reasoning behind this is in the cyberpunk colour palette.

Fit and sizing

Bottoms are the garment most affected by the difference between European and US sizing, and the one where a letter size tells you least.

Three measurements matter, in this order:

  1. Waist, flat. Measure a pair you own that fits, laid flat, across the waistband. Double it. Compare.
  2. Inseam. This decides whether the cuff sits at your ankle or halfway up your calf. Joggers are especially unforgiving here.
  3. Leg opening. The number that determines how much taper you actually get. Rarely published, and when it is, that tells you something about the brand.

Our flat measurements are published per garment in the size guide index.

Building outfits from the bottom up

  • Everyday: tapered joggers, graphic hoodie, dark trainers.
  • Going out: plain tapered trousers, graphic tee, open zip hoodie.
  • Cold and wet: joggers, hoodie, parka.
  • Convention: cargos, back-print hoodie, beanie. The one day the rules bend.
  • Summer: plain dark shorts, graphic tee, packable windbreaker.

Frequently asked questions

What trousers go with a cyberpunk hoodie?

Anything plain, dark and tapered. Joggers are the default; plain tapered trousers are the more versatile choice. Avoid a second graphic below the waist.

Are joggers or cargo pants better for techwear?

Joggers are easier to wear and automatically tapered. Cargos look more technical and carry more, but tip into costume faster. If you own neither, start with joggers.

Should cyberpunk trousers be tight or loose?

Neither. Roomy through the thigh, narrow at the ankle. The contrast between the two is the point: skinny throughout loses the technical read, straight throughout loses the silhouette.

What colour should the bottoms be?

Black, charcoal or another deep neutral, near enough always. The bottoms are the dark field that makes everything above them work.

How do NEOMACHI joggers fit?

They follow a European fit with a tapered leg and a cuffed ankle. Measure a pair you own flat across the waistband and compare with the size guide rather than ordering by letter.

Get the base right

All NEOMACHI bottoms are printed in Europe with published flat measurements, so you can check the taper and the inseam before you order rather than after. The rest of the range is in cyberpunk clothing.
