How Should a Hoodie Fit? Fit, Sizing and Measuring Guide
A hoodie should fit at the shoulders first: the shoulder seam sits on or just past the edge of your shoulder, the cuffs reach your wrist bone, and the hem lands around your hip or just below the belt. Everything else (slim or relaxed through the body, cropped or long) is a style choice. This guide explains how a hoodie should fit, how to measure for one, and how our slim-fit hoodies size so you get it right first time.
How should a hoodie fit? The five checkpoints
1. Shoulders
The single most important point. On a regular or slim hoodie, the shoulder seam should sit right at the edge of your shoulder bone. Drooping a few centimetres down the arm is fine if the hoodie is cut oversized on purpose; drooping on a regular cut just means it is too big.
2. Chest and body
You should be able to pinch a few centimetres of fabric either side of the chest. Tight across the chest means size up; a parachute of fabric means size down. A slim fit follows the body without clinging; a relaxed fit hangs straight from the chest.
3. Sleeves
Cuffs should reach the wrist bone with your arms by your sides, and not ride halfway up the forearm when you reach forward. A little stacking at the cuff is normal and looks good.
4. Length
The hem should cover your waistband with your arms raised and usually ends at the hip. Shorter reads more modern and works with high-rise trousers; longer suits tall frames and layering.
5. The hood
Up, it should cover your head without falling over your eyes. Down, it should sit flat on your back. A well-made hood has two or three panels and enough depth that it does not pull the neckline back.
Slim, regular or oversized?
- Slim fit follows the body and keeps a back print flat and readable. Best for layering under a jacket.
- Regular fit gives a little more room through the body. The safe middle ground.
- Oversized has dropped shoulders, wider body and longer sleeves, cut that way on purpose. Sizing up in a slim hoodie gives you room, but not a true oversized silhouette.
Fit also changes the look of a graphic. On a slim hoodie, a large back print sits like a poster. On an oversized hoodie, it drapes and folds. If the artwork matters to you, slim or regular shows it best.
How to measure for a hoodie
Ignore the letter on the label. Every brand cuts differently, and the only reliable way to choose is to measure a hoodie you already like:
- Lay it flat, zipped or smoothed out.
- Half chest: measure straight across from armpit to armpit.
- Body length: measure from the highest point of the shoulder (where it meets the hood) to the hem.
- Compare those two numbers with the brand's size chart and pick the closest match.
Allow for a small difference either way. Garments vary by a centimetre or two from the factory, which is normal.
How NEOMACHI hoodies fit
Our pullover hoodies are made on B&C's Inspire Hooded: 280 GSM, 80% organic ring-spun cotton with a 20% recycled polyester fleece lining, GOTS certified and OEKO-TEX Standard 100. They have a slim fit and are true to size. Take your usual size for a close fit; size up one for a relaxed, baggier look or if you want to layer something thick underneath.
Flat measurements for the pullover hoodie (half chest / body length, in cm):
- XS: 49 / 68
- S: 52 / 70
- M: 55.5 / 72
- L: 59 / 74
- XL: 62.5 / 76
- 2XL: 66 / 78
- 3XL: 70 / 79
- 4XL: 71 / 80
- 5XL: 76 / 81
The 4XL and 5XL use Stanley/Stella's Drummer hoodie, because the Inspire stops at 3XL. Allow ±2 cm for manufacturing tolerance. The full chart is on our hoodie size guide, fabric details are on hoodie garment info, and zip hoodies have their own zip hoodie info page.
Quick sizing examples
- You like a hoodie that skims the body and wear it under a jacket: your usual size.
- You want the relaxed streetwear look: one size up.
- You are between sizes: size up. A slim hoodie that is slightly big looks intentional; one that is slightly small does not.
Does a hoodie shrink?
Cotton can shrink a little, mostly from heat. Wash at 30°C inside out, skip the tumble dryer and dry flat or on a hanger, and the fit and print will stay where they should. Heat is also what cracks prints, so the same care keeps the artwork sharp.
Styling by fit
- Slim hoodie: pair with wider or straight trousers for contrast, or tapered joggers for a clean techwear line. See our pants and joggers guide.
- Relaxed hoodie: tapered bottoms keep the outline sharp; avoid baggy on baggy.
- Under a jacket: slim always wins. Our jackets guide covers which outer layer to pick.

Frequently asked questions
Should I size up in a hoodie?
Only if you want a looser fit, plan to layer underneath, or are between sizes. For our slim-fit hoodies, take your usual size for a close fit and one size up for a relaxed look.
Where should the shoulder seam sit on a hoodie?
On the edge of your shoulder bone for a slim or regular fit. Lower is only right if the hoodie is cut oversized.
How long should a hoodie be?
Long enough to cover your waistband when you raise your arms, typically ending at the hip.
Are NEOMACHI hoodies true to size?
Yes. They are slim and true to size; size up one for a baggier look.
What does 280 GSM mean?
Grams per square metre: the weight of the fabric. 280 GSM is a solid mid-to-heavy weight, warm enough for autumn and winter without being stiff.
